Troglodytes in the heart of Europe
In southern Italy, cities of tents and slums have been created. Thousands of migrants from Africa live there during the harvest season. They work for a wage of 25 euros, ten to twelve hours a day. The downward trend in vegetable prices combined with increasingly desperate migrants have created an explosive situation. The San Ferdinando camp, which was designed for 280 people, in January housed 1,300. Photographer Andrea Miconi witnessed the situation first hand for a few days.
