Diogo Jota, a footballer for Liverpool, tragically died at the age of 28 after a car accident this morning in Zamora, Spain.

The accident happened at the 65 km mark on the A-52, near the town of Palácio de Sanabria, northwest of Madrid. The Portuguese striker for the Reds was killed when the car he was in with his brother Andre veered off the road and burst into flames.

Witnesses who called emergency services reported that the car was completely engulfed in flames, which then spread to nearby vegetation.

The emergency services in the Castilla y León region confirmed the accident. “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at km 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car had been involved in an accident and was reported to be on fire,” a statement read.

“The 1-1-2 alerted the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora District Council Fire Department, and the Sacyl Coordinating Center of Emergency (CCU) about the accident. An Emergency Medical Assistance Unit (EMU) and Primary Care Medical Personnel (PCP) from the Mombuey Health Centre were dispatched, confirming the death of two individuals at the scene.”

This tragic news comes just two weeks after Jota married his partner Rute Cardoso in Porto.
