Charlie Kirk: The chronicle of the murder – The question that remains open
The United States is in deep mourning following the murder of 31-year-old far-right activist and Donald Trump confidant, Charlie Kirk. His death has ignited a highly charged political atmosphere as the manhunt for his killer continues. Thousands of citizens are paying tribute to Kirk, leaving flowers and attending vigils in his honor.
Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA and emerged as a leading figure among conservative youth, was addressing a crowd of approximately 3,000 young people at Utah Valley University when he was shot in the neck.
Witnesses report that a man in dark clothing appeared on the roof of a nearby building and fired a single shot. Kirk collapsed, bleeding, and was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A video circulating on social media, confirmed by authorities as authentic, shows the moment of the shooting.
19-year-old student Porter Luffer was only 50 feet away from the incident: “I was filming him, I paused the video and immediately the shot rang out. At first we didn’t understand what happened. Then everyone panicked, running in every direction. You could see people hiding in corners, elevators, anywhere.”
Other students spoke of a “chilling uncertainty” about whether the shooter was still in the vicinity. Student Brock Anderson described the atmosphere as “absolutely terrifying”.
Orem’s mayor, David Young, described the incident as “a stark contrast to the peaceful nature of our community”: “I can’t remember the last time a murder occurred here. It’s a dark, indelible mark on our town.” Dozens of flower bouquets have been placed on campus, and candlelight vigils are being organized.

The Investigation and Manhunt
Police initially arrested two suspects, but they were subsequently released due to lack of evidence linking them to the crime. The investigation is now primarily focused on identifying the lone gunman.
Authorities are yet to establish a clear motive for the shooting. While the possibility of a politically motivated attack is a central part of the investigation, it remains unconfirmed.

Trump’s Reaction: ‘A Witness for Truth and Freedom’
An emotional and visibly upset Donald Trump addressed the nation in a video message: “This is a dark moment for America. Charlie Kirk, a patriot and a martyr for truth and freedom, has been tragically killed.
The former president has pointed the finger of blame at the “radical left’s hatred,” but has failed to acknowledge recent attacks on Democrats. His remarks have only served to fan the flames of political tension in a nation already on edge.
The shocking news of Kirk’s death has provoked outrage both in the US and the UK. British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer referred to the incident as “heartbreaking,” advocating for the necessity of free debate without fear. He firmly stated, “There is no justification for political violence.” Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her deep shock, while Kemi Badenoch described the incident as “an attack on the principles of Western civilization.” Nigel Farage, a close friend of Kirk’s, mournfully declared the day as a “dark one for democracy.”
The murder of one of the most influential young conservatives has brought the violent polarization afflicting the US into sharp focus. Former Utah congressman Phil Lyman, who was with Kirk moments before the shooting, recounted the horror of the incident: “3,000 young people witnessed a man being murdered before their eyes. He was an icon for the youth of the conservative party. This will have far-reaching consequences.”
Analysts caution that Kirk’s tragic death could serve as a tipping point, amplifying calls for unity while also fuelling demands for retribution.
The hunt for the perpetrator continues. The killer remains at large, their motives unknown. But one thing is certain: the murder of Charlie Kirk has left an indelible mark on an America already strained by violence and discord. The question remains – will the nation emerge unscathed?
