Almost two decades after the first movie, a sequel to The Simpsons has been officially announced. The iconic animated TV series is set to make its return to the big screen.

20th Century Studios confirmed the sequel, revealing a release date of July 23, 2027.

The movie’s poster, unveiled on Instagram, features an image of a donut being grasped by a hand, with the caption: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

Created by cartoonist Matt Graying, The Simpsons has been a staple of television since its debut in 1989. The show chronicles the everyday adventures of the Simpson family – Homer, Marge, and their three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

The animated series has aired for 37 seasons and is set to continue through to season 40. The first Simpsons Movie, which hit theaters in July 2007, depicted Homer accidentally polluting Springfield’s water supply. This led the Environmental Protection Agency to quarantine the town under a dome, leaving Homer with the task of saving both his town and his family.

The film was a box office hit, grossing over $500 million worldwide. It ended with the nearly silent Maggie uttering the word “Sequel?” during the closing credits.

Back in 2014, Simpsons executive producer and co-writer James L Brooks revealed that Fox had approached him about making a sequel. However, in 2024, writer and executive producer Al Jean stated there were no formal discussions or script development, as talks of a sequel were “frozen” due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jean also mentioned that Disney was closely watching the performance of Inside Out 2 in theaters, following the underperformance of several of its animated films. He added, “I want to see the animation industry fully bounce back to its pre-pandemic state. Then, I think it would make sense to create another Simpsons movie.”

Inside Out 2 went on to gross a whopping 1.6 billion.

The film raked in billions at the box office, momentarily claiming the title of the highest-grossing animated film of all time. However, it was dethroned earlier this year by Ne Zha 2.

Details of the case have yet to be disclosed.

The Simpsons continues to hold the record for the longest-running animated series, and indeed any scripted prime-time show on US television, boasting nearly 800 episodes over its 36-year run.
